I've had my HTC Desire on Vodafone for three months now, so I thought it was time for a report.
Overall:
First off, I must say that the Desire is an awesome phone. It's fast, reliable and easy to use. The overall build quality is excellent. I've been impressed with Android and the 'Sense' interface that HTC add to it. Calls are clear and signal is strong. Making calls and sending texts is a breeze. The Gmail integration and contact management is excellent. The camera is fast and the quality of photos is very good. Battery life is average for a smartphone, so it needs charging every night, but if charge zapping widgets are disabled then it can be extended.
The screen is bright, clear and responsive. The built in web browser works fine. I had qualms about moving to a full touchscreen only keyboard, but the spelling correction software works very well and inputting text is quick and easy on the Desire.
Apps:
The iPhone App Store may be larger than Android's Marketplace, but I've been able to find all the apps I need. Those I couldn't do without include;
Seesmic - A fully featured, free Twitter client, including support for multiple accounts, lists, geotagging and much more. Probably the Android app that I use the most.
Mobisle Notes - A nice looking, simple app for lists and notes.
3banana - Take notes and sync them online with your Snaptic.com account.
Google Listen - A great podcast app. Simple and does the job.
Google Maps Navigation - Free sat nav from Google.
My Tracks - Track you walks and cycle rides on Google Maps.
gStrings - Turn your phone into a guitar tuner. Very useful!
woZZon - Surprisingly accurate and detailed information about events and venues around you.
Google Sky Map - One of those apps that could get you burnt at the stake for witchcraft. Raise your hand to the sky and name stars!
3G Watchdog - Easily keep track of your mobile Internet usage to avoid over-limit fees.
Tricorder - Just for fun. Turn your Desire into a Star Trek Tricorder, only better.
Also worthy of note are the excellent official Android apps from eBay, IMDb, Last.fm, Amazon Kindle, Dictionary.com and Shazam.
The Desire comes preloaded with HTC's own apps and widgets, such as the Twitter client Peep. I've found some useful, some not. Worthy of mention are the bookmarks and calendar widgets, both of which work well. The best, though, is the excellent photo browser app, which works with photos on the phone as well as online Facebook and Flickr galleries. Browsing through a Flickr stream on the Desire's brilliant screen is a great user experience.
Niggles.
No copy and paste within the Gmail app. Not a showstopper, just a bit of a curious omission. No native Gmail tasks app either, but that's an Android failing not HTC.
I've had two phone crashes. Once when installing lots of apps from the Marketplace, one of which seemed to bring the phone to a grinding halt. The second crash was a random quick phone reboot.
The only glitch has been an intermittent problem with the camera preview screen. The camera image splits into two or four with each area coloured differently and moving about as the phone is moved. A user has captured the glitch on Androidforums.com. It's happened a couple of times on my Desire, seemingly when out and about in bright sunlight. If you open and close the camera app a couple of times the problem seems to go away.
Wants:
A nice little blogging app would be nice, like a cut down version of Windows LiveWriter. Oh, and a Wikipedia search widget as well.
Updates:
Since I got my Desire, Google Maps Navigation has been enabled for the UK, which is great, and Android 2.2 is expected soon. So that's pretty good going.
