If you use Twitter and want to keep your Facebook profile updated with the occasional tweet, there is a great little application you can use called Selective Twitter Status, which will post updates to your wall only if you add the tag '#fb' to your tweet. This is a good idea if you’re twittering a lot and don't want to swamp Facebook with updates. It works with fan pages as well, which is very useful.
However, what if you have a personal Facebook profile and a public Facebook page and want to be able to update each one individually from Twitter? You could add Selective Twitter Status to both, but then all tweets that you tag with '#fb' will get posted to both, which is probably not ideal. Or, what if you want a group of twitter accounts, from individual band members maybe, to be able to update a fan page? This wouldn’t work with Selective Twitter Status as it will only look for tweets from one Twitter account. Well, the answer lies in a little creative use of the free online service Twitterfeed.
-
Sign up to Twitterfeed. The obvious, but necessary, first step.
-
Find you Twitter RSS feed. Go to your Twitter profile page, click on the 'RSS feed' link and copy the URL.
-
Create a new feed. Sign in to your Twitterfeed account and create a new feed. You'll need to login to your Facebook account, allow Twitterfeed access, select the fan page that you want to be updated and enter your Twitter RSS feed URL.
-
Set up advanced feed options. On your newly created feed page on Twitterfeed you'll see an 'Advanced Settings' link. Click this to show the advanced options. The important part is the keyword filter. Tick the box to show the filter and add a word or tag of your choice. I use '#fbf', but it can be anything you want. Also, choose 'description only' from the post content options, as the title and description of tweets are the same in Twitter RSS feeds. Make sure you save your changes.
-
Twitter away. Tweet as normal and when you want to just add the tag or keywords you have set up and the tweet should appear on your fan page when Twitterfeed updates.
If you want multiple Twitter accounts to be able to update the fan page, then simply repeat the steps above for each account. To make it clear where the tweet is coming from you can add a different start to each Twitter account's updates on Facebook via the 'post prefix' in twitterfeed advanced options, 'Tweet from Paul:', 'Tweet from Ringo:', etc. The twitter account name is automatically posted as well, so you may find this unnecessary.
The disadvantage of this set up is that Twitterfeed will only update once every 30 minutes, but that's probably OK for most situations. Also, unlike Selective Twitter Status, any tag you use, such as '#fbf', will remain in the update posted to your fan page, but you could always use a keyword instead, which would look less obvious.
