Here are a few little tips and tricks I've come across while writing for my blog:
1) If you get stuck and spend ages trying to finish a blog post it's usually because there's something fundamentally wrong with the premise of the article. It can takes ages to see what it is. So if you do get stuck, just leave it alone and come back to it the next day. Hopefully the fog will have cleared and you'll be able to pinpoint the problem.
2) Keep something with you all the time that you can start drafting out articles with, such as a smartphone. You never know when or where inspiration will strike.
3) Use a service such as
BlogMailr to publish posts straight from your phone via email. In fact, that's how I did this post - started in a car park, finished in a caravan by the sea, published while driving home.
4) If you're writing a techie post that has some example server-side code, then why not render out the results as JavaScript and embed it in the post so visitors can see the code running live directly, rather than on a separate 'see the code in action' page.
5) Redraft, re-read and edit. Don't be afraid to throw stuff out.
6) Stay on track. Decide on your theme and stick to it.
7) The spell check button is your friend. Use it.
8) Try reading your article out loud. Does it still make sense and do the words flow naturally? If so, you could be on to a winner.
9) If necessary, embed a handful of quality, relevant hyperlinks that will explain or expand on the themes in your post. If the site you want to link to runs an affiliate scheme then why not sign up and maybe get some return for you hard work!
