Facebook If you use Twitter and want to keep your Facebook profile updated with the occasional tweet, there is a great little application you can use called Selective Twitter Status, which will post updates to your wall only if you add the tag '#fb' to your tweet. This is a good idea if you’re twittering a lot and don't want to swamp Facebook with updates. It works with fan pages as well, which is very useful.

However, what if you have a personal Facebook profile and a public Facebook page and want to be able to update each one individually from Twitter? You could add Selective Twitter Status to both, but then all tweets that you tag with '#fb' will get posted to both, which is probably not ideal. Or, what if you want a group of twitter accounts, from individual band members maybe, to be able to update a fan page? This wouldn’t work with Selective Twitter Status as it will only look for tweets from one Twitter account. Well, the answer lies in a little creative use of the free online service Twitterfeed.

I've recently set up a Facebook fan page for my website, music, blogging, etc. I followed 'The Blogger's Guide to Facebook' online tutorial, which I recommend. It's detailed and has several step-by-step videos. While setting up my page I came across a couple of extra little tweaks that I thought I'd share in this post.

Twitterfeed now has the ability to post to your Facebook fan page wall. Just sign up, set up your feeds, link them to your Facebook account and your fan page wall will stay automatically updated with your latest blog posts etc.

I wanted to link my public Google Calendar, which has all my gigs, to Facebook. There are several applications that will import Facebook events into Google Calendar, but I wanted one that works the other way round. I found iCalendar to Event, which will take the iCal format of a public calendar and import it into Facebook events. You just need to install it, point it at the URL for your Google Calendar and all your events will be synced with your Facebook fan page.

Online servicesA few short years ago your website could stand alone, an island in the sea of information washing around the Internet. Now, with the advent of web 2.0, social media, mobile internet, etc., your website can no longer survive alone. In fact, it would be foolish to ignore the latest technologies and try to do so. Indeed, these days some websites are becoming little more than a central point that lists links to online social media services.

Here is a list of the online services, most of them free, that I use on my website and that I find essential. It's not a comprehensive list of all the web services out there by any means, and there are several that I use but haven't integrated with my site yet, such as posterous and flickr, which aren't on the list. Anyway, in no particular order, here goes;
